The Authentic makers (Slippers)

The Rhodopian woollen slippers are handmade by a woman of extraordinary spiritual strength. Me, being a strong woman, have my moments of weakness when I am on the verge of giving up but when I learned about this woman, I said to myself: “You have no right to complain”. She is a woman born in a small village in the Rhodope Mountains. She was born with no wrists on both arms but that didn’t put her down and she started making these high-quality slippers in a centuries-old technique.

About the work

The woollen slippers are sewn from a special 100% woollen cloth and a special braiding thread for decoration of the upper part of the slippers. The braiding threads are made by other craftswomen, while this woman designs, sews and embroiders the slippers on a special machine keeping the traditional motifs and symbols of the Rhodopian region.
